It would be helpful if eye test appointments are arranged prior to the day if possible.  To make an appointment or for more information click the icon below.

Eye Testing

There will be an eye testing session with Mr Goodyear (registered with the British Veterinary Association's eye panel) at Mid-Way Wheaten Day on Sunday 8th June at Middlewich Community Centre, Middlewich, Cheshire.

Our breed does not have any serious eye problems and we would like to keep it this way. Every Wheaten's eyes are important, but if you're planning to breed from your Wheaten, it's especially important to have the eyes tested.

The test is painless for the dog.  Drops are put into the eyes to expand the pupils and then after 20 minutes or so, the dog's eyes are examined using an ophthalmoscope.  This is like a small torch and allows the examiner to see into the back of the eye to the retina.  The owner is given two copies of the test results - one to keep and one for their own veterinary surgeon.

Cost of the test is £21 per dog (assuming that we have 25 dogs for Mr Goodyear to examine), if not, the cost will be higher.  The Club's health fund helps to keep the prices as low as possible.

Anyone wishing to have their dog's eyes tested will need to take their dog's Kennel Club Registration certificate.  There is a place on the document to record the fact that an eye examination has been done.

Litter testing for pups of 6 weeks can also be done.  This needs to be arranged in advance so that the puppies can be done first to avoid any chance of infection.
